May 1, 2009 - The Shaker High School
baseball team recently helped raise more than $600 for an
elementary student who is battling cancer.
On April 25, the baseball team held its
first "elementary school night" at the Boght Baseball Complex,
home of the North Colonie Youth Baseball Program. Ben Stowell, a
Blue Creek Elementary student who is battling cancer, threw out
the ceremonial first pitch, and his brother James also
participated in the event. Tricia Carlson, a Blue Creek teacher,
and several of Ben's friends sold Blue Creek cookbooks to raise
money to help pay Ben's medical expenses.
Coaches Pete Mravlja and Leslie
Archer-Kassel helped organize the event, which was well
attended. The first 300 students who arrived were given free
Shaker baseball stress balls.
Shaker defeated Troy 16-6.
