High school students to show that "Shaker Cares"

March 17, 2009 - Shaker High School students plan to make cards for hospitalized children and collect food, clothing and other items during "Shaker Cares Week," March 16-20.

Shaker Cares Week is sponsored by the Shaker High School Student Government and is designed to raise awareness of social problems around the world and here in our own community. The following events will be held during the week:

  • Monday, March 16 - Fight Poverty in America

The goal is to raise awareness of the extent of poverty in American and to inform students of how they can make a difference in fighting this crisis. We are asking students to bring in new or gently used clothes, books, toys and other household items, which will be donated to a local Equinox youth shelter.

  • Tuesday, March 17 - Going Green

The goal is to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage students to make a difference by recycling various items including used ink cartridges, plastic bags and more. We are also asking that students wear green in support of the cause. All recyclables collected will go toward the national RecycleMania competition through the University at Albany.

  • Wednesday, March 18 - Stop World Hunger

The goal is to raise awareness of the global issue of hunger and allow students to make a difference in our local community. We are asking student to bring in canned goods, rice, pasta or any other non-perishable food items. All food collected will be donated to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

  • Thursday, March 19 - Make a Child Smile Today

The goal is to raise awareness of how students can make a difference in the lives of children struggling with various illnesses. We are asking students to donate new stuffed animals to give to sick children. There will also be tables set up in both cafeterias during all lunch periods where students can write get well cards. All stuffed animals and cards will be donated to the patients at the Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center.

TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
