March 17, 2009 - Shaker High School students plan to make cards
for hospitalized children and collect food, clothing and other
items during "Shaker Cares Week," March 16-20.
Shaker Cares Week is sponsored by the Shaker
High School Student Government and is designed to raise
awareness of social problems around the world and here in our
own community. The following events will be held during the
week:

Monday, March 16 - Fight Poverty in
America
The goal is to raise awareness of the
extent of poverty in American and to inform students of how
they can make a difference in fighting this crisis. We are
asking students to bring in new or gently used clothes,
books, toys and other household items, which will be donated
to a local Equinox youth shelter.

Tuesday, March 17 - Going Green
The goal is to raise awareness of
environmental issues and encourage students to make a
difference by recycling various items including used ink
cartridges, plastic bags and more. We are also asking that
students wear green in support of the cause. All recyclables
collected will go toward the national RecycleMania
competition through the University at Albany.

Wednesday, March 18 - Stop World
Hunger
The goal is to raise awareness of the
global issue of hunger and allow students to make a
difference in our local community. We are asking student to
bring in canned goods, rice, pasta or any other
non-perishable food items. All food collected will be
donated to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

Thursday, March 19 - Make a Child
Smile Today
The goal is to raise awareness of how
students can make a difference in the lives of children
struggling with various illnesses. We are asking students to
donate new stuffed animals to give to sick children. There
will also be tables set up in both cafeterias during all
lunch periods where students can write get well cards. All
stuffed animals and cards will be donated to the patients at
the Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center.
