March 5, 2009 - The Shaker Junior High
School Math Club is headed to the Math Counts state championship
after an impressive finish at the regional competition, held
Saturday, Feb. 28 at the General Electric Research and
Development Center in Niskayuna.
The eight-member team placed third out of 20
area teams, and team member Greg Hickey was the tournament's top
individual scorer out of about 120 students who participated.
Hickey's teammates were Youssef Elasser, Mauj Goyal, Arun Job,
Samad Khan, Mina Kodsi, Gili Rusak and Katie Yan.
The team's third-place finish qualifies them to advance to the
state competition, which will be held at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute in Troy on Saturday, March 14.
Teams can send four students and two
alternates to the state tournament. Representing Shaker Junior
High will be Greg Hickey, Gili Rusak, Youssef Elasser and Arun
Job. The two alternates have not yet been chosen.
The team's advisors are Mr. Mike Moffre, Ms.
Teresa Peters and Ms. Debbie Howard.
