March
26, 2008 – In honor of Pi Day, recognized nationally on March 14,
Shaker Junior High and Shaker Senior High School students celebrated
the irrational number 3.14, also known as pi. Students created pi
poems, songs and posters, participated in a variety of
competitions and, of course, ate pie!
More than 120 Shaker High School students and teachers gathered in
the Taft Dining Room to participate in a pie-eating relay race to
win coupons for free pizza at Pizzeria Uno or free ice cream at
Stewarts.
Teams of six, wearing Pi Day t-shirts they created, were cheered on
by fellow students, faculty and staff. Ultimately, "The Irrational
AP-ers,” led by team captain Sarah Lee and team members Erin Burke,
Matt Capeless, Meg Cheney and Josh Malkin won the competition. “The
π-rates,” led by captain Sana Khan and team members Mike Fedullo,
Sean Murphy, Alex Schlosser and Scotty Sommerville were the
runners-up.
Three high school students, Danny Fitzpatrick, Amy Lorenc and Tory
Racette, also participated in a pi recitation contest. Fitzpatrick recited an astounding 76 decimal places of pi!
Congratulations to all of the participating students for
their hard work.

Pi is an infinite
decimal that represents the ratio of the circumference of a
circle to its diameter. Pi Day falls on March 14, or 3/14,
because the numbers 3.14 are the beginning of this
never-ending decimal. |
