Feb. 11, 2008 - The North Colonie Central School District's Director
of Custodial Services Chris Demetreus is passionate about providing
students and faculty with healthier school buildings and classrooms.
"What we do today can make a difference for tomorrow," said
Demetreus.
Recognizing the negative effects of traditional cleaning chemicals,
Demetreus and his custodial staff began using healthier,
environmentally safe, Green Seal certified cleaning products
throughout the district several years ago.
"These products are safe and extremely effective at cleaning," said
Demetreus. Green cleaning products significantly reduce student and
staff exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and substances
present in other types of cleaning products.
Thanks to his resourcefulness and initiative, North Colonie was
ready when the state of New York enacted a law in September 2006
mandating green cleaning in all New York State schools.
In fact, in December 2006 the district was heralded as a leader in
the Capital Region for incorporating green cleaning products into
its daily cleaning regimen. More than a year later, the district
continues to embrace the ideals of green cleaning by finding new
ways to provide students with the healthiest school facilities
possible.
Nearly all of the cleaning products currently used by North Colonie
are Green Seal certified, including glass cleaner, floor cleaner,
bathroom cleaner and paper towels.
Last summer, a Green Seal certified floor finishing product was
applied to all classrooms and hallways throughout the district, and
Green Seal certified cleaning products were supplied to each
elementary school classroom.
By going “green,” the North Colonie Central School District has been
able to accommodate its educational goals in an energy-efficient,
environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner.
