June 27, 2008 – As a culmination of students’
dedicated research, analysis and collaboration over the past school
year, Shaker High School held its fifth annual Science Research
Symposium in June in the Taft Hall cafeteria.
More than 30 students enrolled in the district’s science research
program presented their findings, answered questions and thanked
their mentors publicly in front of the larger school community.
Research projects ranged from the study of prostate cancer and
breast cancer to the study of heart disease.
The three-year program affords sophomores, juniors and seniors the
opportunity to explore a topic of their interest. Each year,
students conduct scientific research inside and outside of the
classroom under the guidance of their classroom teacher and an
appropriate scientific mentor from the community. Students read
scientific journals, conduct statistical analyses and present their
research findings to their class, as well as compete in regional and
statewide competitions.
Many of the students have received research awards and scholarships.
By the end of their senior year, these students also have the
potential to earn 12 undergraduate credits from the University at
Albany.
Congratulations to these distinguished researchers for a job well
done!
