June 28, 2008 – On Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m. more than 500
students representing the Class of 2008 accepted their diplomas in
front of an enthusiastic audience comprised of family, friends,
teachers and staff at the 50th annual commencement ceremony held at
the University at Albany’s SEFCU Arena.
Historically, Shaker High School does not designate a valedictorian
or salutatorian. However, more than 20 students were recognized for
making it to the top five percent of their class. Those students
are: Jeffrey Audi, Meghan Brady, Steven Brown, Christie Cheont, Adam
Drake, Katherine Edwards, Ryan Gardner, Maureen Hill, Stephanie
June, Marissa Kewley, Jin-Ah Kim, Kumar Lai, Peter Mans, Andrew
Marthy, Angela Mu, Kelsey Ogden, Joseph Pelletier, Gregory Skiba,
Alexander Slichko, Frank Tan, Susanna Todaro, Nicole Tuong and Junya
Yin.
The class officers played an important role in the graduation
ceremony. Class secretary Jenna Waltersdorf delivered the
invocation, while class president Adam Drake spoke on behalf of his
peers and class treasurer Ryan Gifford presented the administration
with the class gift.
Superintendent Randy Ehrenberg introduced Joseph Finder, one of the
world’s best thriller writers, who delivered the graduation address.
In addition, Board of Education President Joan Hart congratulated
the graduates for their achievements.
Shaker High School principal Richard Murphy, along with Taft Hall
principal Dr. Jane Rose and Lafollette Hall principal Jan Zadoorian
presented students with their diplomas. In closing, Rose led the
class and audience in singing the Shaker High School alma mater.
Congratulations graduates and best wishes for the future!
