Author and illustrator John Steven Gurney is pictured drawing a caricature of one lucky Southgate student.

October 4, 2007 - The illustrator of more than 100 books for children, including The Bailey School Kids, The Bailey City Monster series and the A to Z Mysteries, John Steven Gurney, visited Southgate Elementary School on Oct. 3 and 4.

Gurney is also the author and illustrator of the book Dinosaur Train, and has many other stories that are currently under review by various publishers. 

Gurney gave an informative and entertaining presentation for each elementary school grade level throughout his two-day visit where he shared a selection of his paintings, sketches and photographs.

Gurney described how he became interested in drawing and discussed the process of developing illustrations. He also shared a PowerPoint presentation and even sketched an 18x24 caricature of one lucky student during each presentation.
