June 4, 2008 – From school children to budding artists, Blue Creek
elementary students got in touch with their creative spirit during
an eleven-day residency with local singer/songwriter Brian
Chevalier.
Focusing on character education as a theme, students began
brainstorming ideas for songs related to specific character traits
chosen for their grade level. These included respect, cooperation,
friendship, responsibility, perseverance, honesty and sportsmanship.
Chevalier, along with music teacher Brooke Greco, worked with
students to explore the entire songwriting process. Together they
wrote and organized song lyrics, including a chorus and bridge. They
also chose the song type, instrument sounds, and beat of their
music.
After students spent two weeks practicing their songs, Chevalier
returned to the school with his recording equipment to capture their
songs electronically, make edits and create a final recording.
“Brian took these recordings and worked from his studio at
home—putting all the songs on a Blue Creek Character Education CD,”
said third-grade teacher Tricia Carlson.
The title of the professional-grade CD is "Shine Your Light." Art
teacher Maya Trawinski selected samples of 5th and 6th grade student
artwork for the front, back and inside covers of the CD, while
computer aide Eva Vandrei took several photos and recordings of the
entire process.
“It was a nice collaboration!” said Carlson.
On Thursday, May 29, the students gave a special performance
highlighting tracks from their CD at Shaker High School in front of
audience filled with their families and friends.
“The students and teachers have responded extremely well to this
residency,” said Carlson. “The concert and CD were terrific
culminating experiences.”
