November 2006 - On Nov. 15, Mr. LaGattas’ Advanced Placement
Chemistry students traveled to Cornell to spend a day working with
some of their most advanced imaging equipment.
The two main facilities visited were:
-
The X-Ray Diffraction Facility, managed by
Dr. Maura Weathers. This facility allowed students the
opportunity to see and work with various materials research
tools including a small angle X-Ray scattering system, a general
diffraction detection system, powder diffractometers, a
back-reflection Laue system and a high resolution diffractometer.
These tools allowed students to visualize structures on the
atomic level, and;
-
The UHV-STEM/Keck FESEM Facility. The Ultra
High Vacuum Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (UHV-STEM)
and the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM)
allowed our students to view some biological specimens at well
over 100,000x magnification. The system is capable of magnifying
structures to 1,000,000x m.
