New title for veteran district leader

| July 12, 2017

During its annual organizational meeting in July, the North Colonie Board of Education unanimously voted to change the title of the leadership position held by Kathleen Skeals from Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction to Deputy Superintendent.

The board cited that since Ms. Skeals began serving as the assistant superintendent, the duties of this key leadership role have evolved and are not reflected in her previous title. These include a vital and important role in the budgeting process, personnel management and her leadership in the current capital building project process.

The change in title does not affect Ms. Skeals’ terms or conditions of employment.

“Kathy is an exceptional leadership presence who is held in the highest regard within our educational community,” said Superintendent Joseph Corr. “Her commitment to the district has always been to all facets of district leadership, and this new title reflects recognition of the comprehensive role that she has taken to move the district forward and ensure that all students are provided the high-quality, relevant and equitable education they deserve.”

Ms. Skeals was appointed to the position of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for North Colonie in September 2010. She started her career in North Colonie in 1988 as an English teacher at Shaker Junior High School. Ms. Skeals is a Fulbright Scholar having completed a year of teaching in England, has been honored by the New York State Council of English Teachers as Educator of the Year, and was selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction in 2010.

Congratulations to Ms. Skeals on this important recognition of her hard work and dedication to North Colonie schools.
