Library Time

Students come to the library each week with their class for a variety of learning activities and book exchange.

Literature

During their time in the library, students are exposed to a variety of literature:

  • authors and illustrators

  • award-winning books

  • multicultural literature

  • literary genres

  • book talks

Library Skills

Students learn library skills appropriate to each grade level, including searching for library materials on the library catalog and arrangement and location of library materials.

Research

The research objective is that students become competent in the research process by using available and appropriate materials. While students in the primary grades may begin learning to research, all students in grades four, five and six are involved in a formal project. The projects are tied to the science or social studies curriculum for each grade.

During the research process, students:

  • locate and select resources

  • evaluate sources and information

  • extract relevant information from sources

  • cite sources

Computer Literacy

Computer literacy is part of the library curriculum in grades four through six. Students learn about:

  • Internet use

  • Internet safety

  • evaluating Web sites

  • ethical issues including copyright and plagiarism

What's Happening in the Library?

We are very happy to announce that Loudonville School is participating in the New York State Reading Association's Charlotte Awards 2008 in the spring. The nominated books were purchased with money from the Loudonville Building Council.

According to the association, the purpose of the Charlotte Award is to encourage students to read outstanding literature and ultimately become life-long readers. Additionally, the award recognizes the authors and illustrators of such literature. Students in New York State will read titles on the ballot and vote for their favorites.

The teachers and I will be reading the nominated picture books to the children and the novels can be read aloud or by the children individually in the upper grades. In March, the students will vote for their favorite nominee. I will submit the school totals to the state and we will be notified of the state results and winners later in the spring.
