Summer Reading Project for Grades 7 and 8

| June 28, 2017

North Colonie educators believe that reading during the vacation months contributes significantly to a student’s academic growth. As a result, all 8th grade students are required to read three (3) books and complete a summer reading project, while all 7th grade students are required to read two (2) books and complete a summer reading project.

Grade 7 students may choose books from the Summer Reading List for Grade 7, or may substitute any other grade-appropriate book. Similarly, grade 8 students may choose books from the recommended Summer Reading List for Grade 8, or may substitute any other grade-appropriate book.

These lists have been designed to provide for various reading levels and interests. Parents and students are advised to select books wisely, as summer reading should be an enjoyable experience, and the books chosen should be appropriate for the student both in terms of content and level of difficulty.

Both the 8th grade book list and the 7th grade book lists can also be found on the SJHS Library webpage. Additional summer reading packets and index cards are available in the main office at Shaker Junior High School.

8th grade summer reading assignment

On the front of  a 5” x 8” index card, provide the following information for the three books you read:

  1. Title
  2. Author
  3. Genre
  4. Setting (time and place)
  5. Three (3)  main events

On the back of the card, write a brief explanation of the theme (main idea, lesson learned) of your books that you can use as a “jumping off point” for an in-class writing piece.

Note:  You should have one index card for each book (a total of THREE cards).

In September, students will use the information from their cards to develop an in-class project that will be graded.  The index cards will be due the first week of school.

Remember that at least three books preferably from the recommended grade 8 reading list must be read. Download a copy of the grade 8 summer reading assignment
