Library Skills

each grade level, including searching for materials on the
library catalog and locating materials.

become competent in the research process by using available and
appropriate materials. While students in the primary grades may
begin learning to

What's Happening in the Library
‘Tis the season to begin thinking about the
Caldecott and Newbery Book Awards. The
Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for
Library Service to Children to the artist of the most
distinguished American picture book for children. The
John Newbery Medal is given by the Association for Library
Service to Children to the author of the most distinguished
contribution to American literature for children. At Forts Ferry
School, the children will review possible picture books and
children’s literature that may be in contention for one of these
two awards. After reviewing the potential award winning books,
the students will have the opportunity to vote for their
Caldecott and Newbery Book winners. It will be interesting to
see how closely Forts Ferry’s book winners match the Caldecott
and Newbery Book winners for 2010.
