The Association of Mathematics Teachers of NYS Journal puts out a quarterly publication each year with a section titled “Elementary Problems.” The journal proposes a series of four or five problems that students in grades K-6 can submit answers to. In the fall of 2016, eight Southgate Alternate Math students from Melissa Vatalaro’s class submitted answers, and were chosen to be published in the most recent edition of the journal.

“Being included in this publication has been a great motivator for my students and has reinforced the 8 Mathematical Practices of the Common Core Standards,” said Vatalaro.

The students were praised by the journal for their extensive work on the problems and explanations of their answers.
