Library Hours

8:05 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Students come to the library each week with their class for a variety of learning activities and book exchange.

The library is open for book return each morning from bus arrival time until the start of the school day.

Book Promotion/Literature

Students at all grade levels are exposed to a variety of literature:

  • authors and illustrators

  • award-winning books

  • multicultural literature

  • literary genres

  • book talks

Research

The research objective is for students to become competent in the research process by using available and appropriate materials. While students in the primary grades may begin learning to research, all students in grades four, five and six are involved in a formal project.

During the research process, students:

  • locate and select resources

  • evaluate sources and information

  • extract relevant information from sources

  • cite sources

The research project is tied to the science or social studies curriculum for each grade, and is completed in collaboration with the classroom teacher.

Computer Literacy

Computer literacy is part of the library curriculum in grades four through six. Students are presented with information about:

  • uses of the computer

  • evaluation of Internet Web sites

  • ethics, such as ownership of information

  • computer history

Library Skills

Students learn library skills appropriate for each grade level, including searching for library materials on the public access catalog, and arrangement and location of library materials.

What's Happening in the Library?

Many new books are arriving at the Boght Hills Library. During book exchange, students can enjoy browsing our new book section to discover some new favorite books and authors.

Kindergarteners are listening to many different stories as we connect to what they are learning about in the classroom. Students in grade 1 are continuing mini-author units. They listen to several
titles by the same author, compare them, and vote for their favorites. We are currently reading books by the author/illustrator Emily Arnold McCully and will soon enjoy selections by Lois Ehlert.

In grade 2, students are listening to excerpts of books by Beverly Cleary. We started with the book Ramona the Pest when the character of Ramona starts kindergarten. The second graders had fun remembering what it was like when they started kindergarten. In third grade, students completed research on presidents using World Book Encyclopedia and created a timeline to display the information. Third grade students will enjoy a selection of literature throughout March.

In grades 4 and 5, students are continuing library objectives relating to their research projects on the forces of the earth (grade 4) and Canada (grade 5). Students are learning about the different types of sources, using these sources to find information, and completing a bibliography form to list all of their research materials. Sixth graders are listening to a selection of mythology from different cultures. To finish our study of mythology, students will read a selection of myths on their own and complete a project using what they learned.

In May, the author David Schwartz will be visiting grades 4-6. The spring book fair is also coming in May. Watch for more information about both of these wonderful events.

Birthday Book Club

The Birthday Book Club will be continued this year. The Birthday Book Club is an opportunity to donate a book to the Boght Hills Library in honor of a student’s birthday. The book is labeled as a “Birthday Book” and is presented to the child during their library time. The student can also be the first one to check the book out of the library. Books can be sent to school with your child or dropped off at the library if it is a surprise. Please include a note with the student’s name, date of birth, and the name of the person/family donating the book. This is a unique way to demonstrate the value of books and reading. Please contact the librarian if you have any questions about the Birthday Book Club or would like book suggestions.

Thanks for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you for your support of the Scholastic Book Fair in October! The students enjoyed browsing the book fair and sharing books with each other. The sixth grade library helpers did a superb job setting up the book fair and helping younger students in the library. Clifford made an appearance for the kindergarten and first grade students. Thank you to Mrs. Kormanek for serving as the chairperson and to all the volunteers who make the book fair so great for our students.
