Residents to vote
on proposed budget May 20
On Tuesday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to
9 p.m. residents of the North Colonie and Maplewood school
districts will go to the polls to decide on an $88,439,000
proposed budget. If approved, it would result in an estimated
residential tax rate increase of 3.76 percent—the smallest
proposed increase in a decade. Voters will also elect three
candidates to the Board of Education. For more information,

self-confidence

What could be better than reading a good
book with a special friend by your side? That’s what Blue Creek
students have been discovering with the Paws for Reading Program
since it was established by third-grade teacher Kathy Thompson
in October 2007.

Satterlee
receives Champion of Character Leadership Award
Blue
Creek school counselor Eileen Satterlee was honored by the
Academy for Character Education at The Sage Colleges for her
commitment to Blue Creek's School Success Team. She received the
Champion of Character Leadership Award in March at the Caring
Community Dinner at the Franklin Plaza in Troy.

Chef/TV host teaches students to make
healthy snacks

Elementary students are used to eating school lunches. However,
it’s usually the food service staff that prepares the meals.
That changed late last week, as a group of sixth-graders from
Blue Creek Elementary School learned to create their own
delicious and healthy treats from a seasoned professional.
Carmine Sprio, chef/owner of Carmine’s Restaurant and host of
the new reality TV show, Carmine’s, and his television
crew stopped by the school’s cafeteria to videotape an episode
on nutritious snacks.

Voters approve $7 million capital project
referendum
Voters in the North Colonie and Maplewood-Colonie
Common School Districts overwhelmingly approved a $7 million capital
project referendum on Monday, March 3.
Official voting results are 738 yes votes to 153 no votes—a passing
margin of 82.8%.

Sixth grader wins
district-wide Spelling Bee

After six grueling rounds, Loudonville Elementary School sixth
grader Katrina Simonsen won the district-wide spelling bee
earlier this week by correctly spelling the word "imperceptible."
Simonsen and runners-up Shaker Junior High School eighth grader
Daniel Egan, Blue Creek sixth grader Won-Kwem Kim and Boght Hills
fourth grader Jordanne Mercier will advance to the regional
competition at Proctor's Theater in Schenectady on March 10.

Students pass on kindness during
“One
Smile Day”
On Wednesday, Dec. 12, Blue Creek Elementary School
held its fourth annual “One
Smile Day,” recognizing the
importance of kindness.
During the day, all classroom teachers read the book, One
Smile, by Cindy McKinley, about a little girl who realizes that
one smile can initiate a chain of positive events throughout the
community. The book is a wonderful example of how children can
change the world by performing simple acts of kindness.

Voters overwhelmingly approve annexation
referendum
On Oct. 11, voters in North Colonie and
Maplewood overwhelmingly approved an official, binding
referendum that will cause the annexation of the
Maplewood-Colonie Common School District by the North Colonie
Central School District. The vote count in North Colonie was
1232 yes votes to 248 no votes, and 214 yes votes to 29 no votes
in Maplewood.

The entire Blue Creek Elementary School student body gathered
outside on a beautiful fall day to participate in the school's
annual International Peace Day celebration. Peace Day is recognized
on Sept. 21 worldwide as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence.
