Birthday celebration changes

| September 12, 2016

Dear Blue Creek Families,

We have some new birthday traditions at Blue Creek! Your child’s classroom teacher will be communicating with you about how birthdays will be celebrated in your child’s classroom. This will include classroom traditions to ensure that each child is recognized on their special day. This year we will also be announcing the names of our birthday kids during our morning announcements. For a variety of reasons we will no longer be allowing food items, goodie bags or trinkets from home to be distributed in class at birthday parties. As our students have an increasing number of dietary restrictions related to allergies, religion, and health conditions, many students are not able to consume treats that are sent in to school. Further, financial hardship can make it difficult for families to send in treats or trinkets. Getting the treats to school presents an issue for other families.

Additionally, we are unable to ensure that the food safety and hygiene practices in every family kitchen meet NYS Department of Health standards for public schools. For reasons of health and respect, we have chosen to have each child be recognized in the same way in their classroom through classroom traditions.

Thank you in advance for your support and respect of our diverse student body. Also, please let us know if your family does not celebrate birthdays and you would prefer to have us not acknowledge the date of your child’s birth.

Please feel free to contact me with any concerns.

Respectfully,

Principal Annette Trapini
