Shaker graduates to compete
at NCAA Division 1 level

Jasleen Sandhu and Jeb Buchanan will go on to compete in NCAA Divison 1 athletics

After graduating from Shaker Senior High School in June, senior athletes Jeb Buchanan and Jasleen Sandhu will go on to compete at the NCAA Division 1 level.

Jeb attended the prestigious David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Florida as a junior. During his senior year, he led his team to a second place finish in sectionals where he qualified for the NYSPHSAA state tournament, to be held in June. Currently, Jeb is ranked number one in Golf Week’s Jr. Amateur Rankings. He will continue to play golf at the University of Connecticut in the Big East Conference this fall.

Jasleen has competed for Shaker’s varsity tennis team since she was in seventh grade. She has won sectional championships in both doubles and singles, and has also competed in the NYSPHSAA state tournament five times. Jasleen has accepted an academic/athletic scholarship to attend Siena College this fall. 

 

Students recognized for leadership, positive character

Congratulations to the nearly 50 students districtwide who were honored with North Colonie Central School District’s Physical Education Department Leadership Awards. Recognized for demonstrating positive character traits, these students received their awards during the department’s fourth-annual Leadership Awards Ceremony on April 22.

“You have shown that you can be a role model for others and should be very proud of yourself,” said Director of Physical Education and Athletics David Herman in a letter to the recipients. “Our hope is that you will continue to develop your positive character traits to become leaders in our schools, on our sport teams and beyond high school.” » MORE

winter scholar-athlete teams

This winter, seven varsity teams qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Team Award by. To qualify, each team must have a cumulative grade point average of more than 90 percent. Congratulations go out to these athletes for their hard work both on the field and in the classroom.

Congratulations to Shaker High School seniors Ashley Gansle, Steven Mercadante and Nick Murray, who were recently recognized by the Capital Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for their exceptional leadership qualities, scholastic achievement, athletic ability and citizenship.

The students received the organization’s annual Capital Zone Secondary Physical Education Leadership Award during the state association’s awards dinner on Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Century House in Latham.

The state association supports, encourages, facilitates, advocates and promotes physically active and healthy lifestyles through school and community programs in health education, physical education, recreation and dance.
 

Varsity sports teams achieve New York State Scholar Athlete Team Awards

This fall, nine sports teams achieved the New York State Scholar Athlete Team Award. To qualify, each team must have a cumulative grade point average of more than 90 percent. All of the athletes on the team with a 90 or above received a pin from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

Donate to Sports Booster Club

The Shaker All-Sport Club financially supports all 29 interscholastic sports at the high school level. The Booster Club is comprised of parents, coaches and administrators who work together to help supply some of the "extras" needed for the athletic teams. » MORE

Congratulations go out to Shaker High School’s Junior Varsity football team, coached by Greg Sheeler with assistance from Shaker graduates Mike Grimes and Andrew Brassard, for winning the Section 2 JV Super Bowl by defeating the undefeated Saratoga 28–0 on Oct. 25 at Saratoga. Shaker qualified for the Super Bowl in the playoffs by defeating Shenendehowa 33-3. » MORE

Coach honored for 50-year commitment to to cross country

Boys Cross Country Coach Edwin Springstead, pictured right, was honored for his 50-year coaching career

Shaker High School Boys' Cross County Coach Edwin Springstead was honored for his dedication and contribution to the sport of cross country during the Shaker Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.

 

"Coach Springstead has personally touched the lives of many people throughout his teaching and coaching career," said North Colonie Girls' Cross Country Coach Marbry Gansle. "He has taught commitment, discipline, dedication, character and how to persevere. We are extremely grateful for his dedication and commitment to our cross country program."
