2007-08 Exhibit Schedule
|
The primary goal of the art program in the
junior high school is to allow students to continue to develop an
appreciation for and an understanding of various art disciplines,
and to continue exploring the art forms as an opportunity for
personal expression.
Instruction builds on the foundation of the art curriculum in the
elementary level and prepares students for high school study in art.
The curriculum is built upon the elements and principles of art and
design, and projects are presented in a problem solving manner.
Students learn to examine and respond critically to artwork of the
great masters and various cultures. They are exposed to a wide range
of art materials through a series of hands-on activities.
Art Instruction for students in junior high is for 10 weeks in both
7th and 8th grade. Accelerated Studio Art in 8th grade is a full
year course, taken in addition to the student’s scheduled 10 week
quarter of art.
Grade 7 Art:
In seventh grade art students explore creative
concepts utilizing the elements and principles of art and design.
Students will solve a series of art problems by using a variety of
two and three-dimensional media. Computer generated images will also
be examined. Art history, appreciation and criticism are emphasized.
Drawing and problem solving skills are enhanced through a series of
sketchbook assignments. Art is provided everyday for a 10-week
period.
Grade 8 Art
The eighth grade art program builds on a
foundation of skills presented during the seventh grade curriculum.
Two and three-dimensional concepts are taught as they relate to the
elements and principles of art and
design. Students will solve a variety of problems involving
sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramics and
computer generated art. Art appreciation and history, as well as art
criticism is part of the eighth grade
curriculum. Art homework and sketchbook assignments will further
enhance the program. Art is provided on
an everyday basis for a 10-week period.
Accelerated Studio Art
Studio in Art, a high school level course, is an
introduction to a variety of art disciplines. Although drawing is a
major focus, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, advertising
and electronic media are integral parts of the curriculum. Art
history and appreciation, as well as art criticism round out the
program. Studio Art is required of all students planning a high
school art sequence, and it meets the art requirement for
graduation. Homework and sketchbook assignments are required. When
taken in eighth grade, admission is based on a teacher and guidance
recommendation, as well as permission of the department supervisor.
An art sequence commitment is expected for high school, beginning
with Drawing in ninth grade. Please note that since this course
earns a high school credit, the attendance policy in effect at the
high school applies to this course. In effect, a student may be
denied course credit based on poor attendance. Refer to the junior
high handbook for an explanation of the policy.
Studio in Art is a high school course that is offered in 8th grade
for students who have been recommended by their art teacher.
Students enrolled in the accelerated program will have the
opportunity to complete a 5 unit art sequence in high school without
having to sacrifice other courses and to complete the art/music
credit graduation requirement while in eight grade.
The program is offered during the school day and is geared for those
students who have a strong interest in art who want to pursue an art
sequence through high school. A fine arts sequence includes the full
year course in Drawing.
By participating in this program, a student would be unable to
participate in a music performing group (band, orchestra or chorus)
due to scheduling complications. Furthermore students would not have
room in their schedules for a study hall, or other support services
they may need. We encourage students and parents discuss any
concerns about scheduling with their guidance counselor.

JHS Accelerated Studio Art Reception
Two students received awards for their
motivation, dedication and overall achievement at the Shaker
Junior High School Accelerated Studio Art Reception on May 1.
Jenny Chung and Mariah Kitner were selected from the 2 Studio
Art sections at the junior high, taught be Mr. Haacker and Mr.
Secord.
Congratulations to both!
Clubs
Throughout the year the three art teachers at
the junior high offer a variety of clubs to students in the areas of
Ceramics, Digital Photography, and General Art.
